Mommy's Garden

My mommy day gift this year is a garden! I am so excited to start growing our own food again! We used to garden quite a bit down in Lakewood, but up here in the higher elevations it is a bit more challenging, especially because of the shorter growing season. The gardening itch hit me a while ago, but the time wasn't right. Then last year I read a devotional written by Nancy Campbell, who founded Above Rubies. She gave me the final push that inspired me to give the higher-elevation gardening a try...having friends who have had success and has offered some good advice helps too! But here is what Nancy has to say about gardening.

"The first home was a garden. God wants our home to be more than brick and timber. He wants it to be a garden, too. The garden was part of God’s plan for the home. It adds beauty to the home, but it also supports the home. The Knox translation of the above Scripture states it clear, “I would have you… plant yourselves gardens of your own to support you.” ...

Nancy goes on to say "I am a great believer in keeping to the plan that God established in the beginning. I believe that part of our homemaking ministry is to help feed our family from the home garden...There is nothing more wonderful than to go to the home garden, harvest vegetables straight from the plants and prepare them for the meal immediately. This is the ultimate plan."

My boys, well two of them anyway, will be working on getting our garden ready this weekend. Here they are putting in all the soil. We are trying a raised bed 4X8 plot for this year (based on Square Foot Gardening) and if all goes well, they will build me more boxes for next year.
