more

Yesterday, Tate lost the privilege of going swimming with Daddy. It was sad really, yet a necessary consequence. My Tate thrives on structure and routine, and during vacation both are on the back burner. Also, the excitement of new adventures just puts the silly bug in his belly. As Chase and I took a walk early this morning, I was reflecting on Tate’s lost privilege and what I want for my children. In one word, I decided I want.….more. More than the ordinary, to build more character in them than what would occur by letting everything “go”.

I am reading a great book by Tim Kimmel, who is an excellent author and father (Raising Kids for True Greatness). Tim’s definition of true greatness is:

grace that demonstrates itself in the attitudes of humility and gratefulness that ultimately lead to the actions of generosity and a servant attitude.

He also puts it this way, “a passionate love for God that demonstrates itself in a unquenchable love and concern for others.”

Kimmel warns that many parents are more concerned, and often equate success, with fame, power, beauty and wealth. He points out that the best things we have to offer in life come from our heart, not our head; from our character, not our charm; from our love, not our looks. I want this for my children, to know that serving others is what it’s all about and our calling from God. I like what Kimmel says:

God has not called us to raise safe kids, He has called us to raise strong ones. He hasn’t called us to raise popular kids; He’s called us to raise spiritually potent ones.

These lessons don’t come from an easy life, a life that doesn’t have trials to figure out along the way. I sometimes tell Tate, “I love you too much to allow you to……” whatever the case may be. However much I want to let something go, I know being a Mommy and helping nurture a young boy into a truly Godly man is an enormous responsibility and something I do not take lightly. So, taking away the privilege of playing at the pool on vacation seems over-the-top to some, but in the bigger picture, I need to keep in mind that we are helping mold his character and hopefully an “others first” attitude.

While I was mulling this idea over (listening to Ginny Owen’s new hymn CD, yes, she has a new CD!!), I remembered a letter written by the late Paul Harvey titled An Open Letter from God. It reminds me that we want our children to have some bumps in the road, and preferably while they are still under our loving wings and can help smooth the way with an eternal perspective. I would be hard-pressed to believe much character could be shaped in a child who is given everything, shielded from all hurts or allowed to behave without restraint. Here is Harvey’s letter:

We tried so hard to make things better for our kids that we made them worse. For my grandchildren, I'd like better.

I'd really like for them to know about hand me down clothes and homemade ice cream and leftover meat loaf sandwiches. I really would.

I hope you learn humility by being humiliated, and that you learn honesty by being cheated.

I hope you learn to make your own bed and mow the lawn and wash the car.

And I really hope nobody gives you a brand new car when you are sixteen.

It will be good if at least one time you can see puppies born and your old dog put to sleep.

I hope you get a black eye fighting for something you believe in.

I hope you have to share a bedroom with your younger brother/sister. And it's all right if you have to draw a line down the middle of the room, but when he wants to crawl under the covers with you because he's scared, I hope you let him.

When you want to see a movie and your little brother/sister wants to tag along, I hope you'll let him/her.

I hope you have to walk uphill to school with your friends and that you live in a town where you can do it safely.

On rainy days when you have to catch a ride, I hope you don't ask your driver to drop you two blocks away so you won't be seen riding with someone as uncool as your Mom.

If you want a slingshot, I hope your Dad teaches you how to make one instead of buying one.

I hope you learn to dig in the dirt and read books.

When you learn to use computers, I hope you also learn to add and subtract in your head.

I hope you get teased by your friends when you have your first crush on a boy\girl, and when you talk back to your mother that you learn what ivory soap tastes like.

May you skin your knee climbing a mountain, burn your hand on a stove and stick your tongue on a frozen flagpole.

I don't care if you try a beer once, but I hope you don't like it. And if a friend offers you dope or a joint, I hope you realize he is not your friend.

I sure hope you make time to sit on a porch with your Grandma/Grandpa and go fishing with your Uncle.

May you feel sorrow at a funeral and joy during the holidays.

I hope your mother punishes you when you throw a baseball through your neighbor's window and that she hugs you and kisses you at Hanukah/Christmas time when you give her a plaster mold of your hand.

These things I wish for you - tough times and disappointment, hard work and happiness. To me, it's the only way to appreciate life.

Written with a pen. Sealed with a kiss. I'm here for you. And if I die before you do, I'll go to heaven and wait for you.

Send this to all of your friends. We secure our friends, not by accepting favors, but by doing them.

My prayer for today: God, help me show more of You to my children, my husband and the others You put in my life! I want to have a passionate love for You that demonstrates itself in a unquenchable love and concern for others. Give me and Tyler the wisdom to help grow spiritually potent children and help them work through hiccups along the way with a unwavering faith and strength in You!

Fruit Tree

Tate and I made a Fruit of the Spirit tree last week. Each fruit 042represents a fruit of the Holy Spirit we want more of in our life. We will take all the "fruits" off the tree and when Tate demonstrates a particular "fruit" he gets to put it on the tree! Then once the tree is full, we will plan something fun, like a trip to the rec center pool or out to lunch!

Little musings from the week

The week has been pretty quiet. Mommy is fully recovered, Daddy is 90% there. Tate didn't blink an eye at the cold we all suffered and even fended off an exposure to strep earlier in the week.

On the subject of our big boy, Tate has been a total champ with his chore cards as of late! These are cards I made on the computer and laminated that list his jobs with pictures - feed the dogs, set the table, brush your teeth, put the clean silverware away - at the bottom of the card 034pile is a "special surprise" card. It is not always there, but when it is he gets a super great surprise! The day this picture was taken he got this awesome Life is Good shirt with a little boy feeding an ice cream cone to his dog! He digs it!

Tate has been spending a lot of quality time with our feathered girls lately. He will go out to see if there are any eggs and if there aren't any yet, he will wait until there is. He walks around with them, talks to 043them and pets them. Sometimes he gets a little frazzled when they try to peck at his shoes, but he is getting used to it. I like it because he is spending a good amount of time outside in the fresh air.

Here are two pictures of a gorgeous rainbow in our backyard this week. We have been getting daily rain showers in the afternoon and this was one of our rewards! And of course, we were reminded of God's promises! 022

And Chase, our cute little angel! He is opening his mouth for the egg yolk, but as you can see, most of it still doesn't stay in! Two days in 008a row now, our little messy faced boy has been waking up in the wee, dark hours of the night (3ish or 4ish) talking and babbling. He goes on for about 20 minutes and then drifts back to sleep. Mommy, on the other hand, does not!!! So I have been going to bed early - 8:45 pillow time for me! :)

Finally, our garden is giving us a plentiful bounty of greens! This is one of our big dinner plates full of one morning harvest. The salads do taste fresher! What fun it has been to see things grow. Next year, I will give Tate his own row and let him grow whatever he wants.

Home front odds and ends

We have added a "Gratitude Attitude" timer to our day! I got the idea from Nancy Campbell in her book The Power of Motherhood (www.aboverubies.org). The idea is we set the timer to go off every so often (every hour or two) and it reminds us to count our blessings! Thank God for the day, the sunshine, our family, our bladder control, our baby, our Daddy, our Grandmas..you get the point.

This past weekend we also finished this great picture idea from Marilyn Boyer (www.thelearningparent.com) from her book Hands-On Character Building. It is a picture of Jesus with a group of children and in place of the little child Jesus is holding we put in Tate's picture. It is hard to see in the photo, but it really looks cool! This will remind Tate that he is precious to Jesus!

Character Curriculum

We have officially started our character lessons for Tate. Up until now, we have been reading different books that describe Godly character traits or have a fun story that demonstrates them in a fun way. But this week we started a more detailed lesson plan. I like to type things out and have it all visible, so here it is taped up on our cabinet.

Here is our plan:

1. Work on the same character trait for 2 weeks.

2. Talk about the definition of the trait (e.g. Self control is doing something even when when you don't feel like it) and talk about what that might mean during the day (e.g. if mommy asks you to wash your hands and you don't want, what would it look like if you used self control?)

3. Go over one or two of the Bible verses that go with that trait (e.g. Do everything without complaining or arguing. Phil 2:14)

4. Listen to a few songs that have the trait as its theme, such as Temper Tantrum Tilly by Patch the Pirate.

5. Read through a few devotionals that relate to our trait. Do an activity with the devotion if it applies.

6. Pray for God to help us live out this trait (and others) throughout the day .

7. Find times during the day that Tate demonstrates that trait and reward it with a sticker, a new book or something fun.

Fun weekend!

We had a nice quiet family weekend. We started Tate's new activity. It is a poster on how to use your body for Jesus. Here is a picture of the basic idea. From here we will add verses that have to do with using our body parts, such as Proverbs 4:25-26 "Look straight ahead, and fix your eyes on what lies before you. Mark out a straight path for your feet; stay on the safe path." So we will velcro these verses near the appropriate body part and do some scripture memorization. I will update on its progress.

Chase went to church on Sunday and was cuddled the whole time by my friend Raney. Here he is in an adorable outfit.

Tate looked especially handsome too!

We finished up the weekend at Sammy's birthday party..he is 3! The kids had fun! Chase was suppose to be sleeping the whole time, but was wide awake for most of it. But the lack of sleep didn't affect his sweet disposition or full night of sleep! :) Here is a picture of the big kids, its hard to get a group of preschoolers to sit still and look into the carmera!
